Contact Us Square Graphic  About Instant Messaging
  • What is Instant Messaging (or IM)?

Instant Messaging is a web service that connects two individuals anywhere in the world using free software.  The software opens up a new window that allows both individuals to type in messages, in a chat-like scenario.

  • How do I instant message with the library?

You need to download the appropriate software, follow the directions for installation, and set up free account.  If you already use Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, or Gmail your IM account can be the same as your email account.  Then add our username to your contacts and start a session.

  • What kind of questions do you answer?

Librarians are able to answer all sorts of reference questions, questions about your account or about the library and its resources.  Please see our list of Frequently Asked Questions for some common answers.   If a question or answer is very involved, we may refer to you a specialist within our staff or ask that we email you with a response.

  • What questions don't you answer?

We will not respond to any questions that are considered vulgar or offensive.  Attempting to engage our staff in inappropriate questions is considered interference with staff duties and could result in a loss of library privileges.

  • What are your hours for this service?

We strive to be available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM until 8:45 PM.  You can always check on our status here.  If you have questions when we are not staffing this service, you can contact us and we will follow-up usually within 24 hours.
