Other options

There are many options to consider in careers that intersect with the library world, but are not necessarily libraries. Below are just a few samples of closely related fields:

  • Library and information schools offer master and PhD degrees required for many library positions. Faculty and part-time instructor positions are needed to train tomorrow's librarians.

  • Archives and archivists share many common values and traits with libraries and librarians.

  • Vendors, publishers and consultants of all sorts supply goods and services of all types to libraries. This can range from information service companies that offer high quality full-text research journals through an online subscription to special book tape that is used to cover a library's label on the spine of a book. Many vendors employ librarians to help develop, research and test products and services. They offer the opportunities of a corporate environment with the focus on libraries as customers.

  • International Opportunities
