LIBRARY TRUSTEES
Donald W. Green
Trustee and Past President,
Clinton-Macomb Public Library Board of Trustees
It is a pleasurable experience for me to have this opportunity to endorse an
outstanding person for a stellar position. The person is Christine Lind Hage
and the position is president of the American Library Association.
While president of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library Board of Trustees, I had
the privilege of associating with Christine for seven years. When she became
director of CMPL, it was a new public library system in the suburbs of Detroit
serving 160,000 people.
In the short period of six years, Christine put together the whole
organization’s system…library policy, benefits, personnel, rules and use of
the library and hiring a new staff of over 105 people. In addition, she was
intimately involved in the planning and construction of three new libraries …
with a total of 107,000 square feet.
One would think all this is enough, but Christine has been active in the
Michigan Library Association, president of the Public Library Association and
very active in ALA including serving on Council from 1999 to the present. On
the local level she has devoted boundless energy to programs like Habitat for
Humanity, The Salvation Army, the Downtown Development and her favorite
-Rotary Club activities.
Christine is a hard worker and is dedicated to making libraries the very best
they can be, all this is done with a smile and cheerful disposition.
Christine Lind Hage has my endorsement and vote … I hope she has yours.

Between March 15 and April 22 we will have an opportunity to select the person
we want to be the next President of the American Library Association. For me
that person is Christine Lind Hage. Christine has impeccable leadership
credentials. She currently is the director of the Clinton-Macomb Public
Library in Clinton Township, Michigan. She has held numerous leadership
positions in ALA and the Michigan Library Association. She is a past President
of the Public Library Association and continues to chair and serve on PLA
committees and is the PLA representative to the ALA Council Christine is a
member of ALTA as is each trustee on her library board.
These are difficult times for libraries of all types. Situations like we have
seen in Salinas California, Buffalo/Erie County New York, and Robbins,
Illinois are only the tip of the iceberg. Libraries nationwide are
experiencing closings and budget cutting to make end meets. We Trustees and
Advocates, who believe that libraries are so important to everyone in our
communities, will continue to be called upon to defend libraries of all types.
Christine Lind Hage will be in our corner as we continue our advocacy efforts
on the local, state, and national levels. She will be an articulate
spokesperson and bring the light of media attention to the fight to save our
libraries. She is, and will continue to be, a tenacious fighter for libraries
and library workers.
As I said Christine Lind Hage has my vote for President of ALA. She has the
experience, skills, and leadership talent to lead ALA forward in these tough
times. She is a visionary, energetic, smart, and totally committed to making
libraries better. And if that wasn’t enough she’s a wonderful person too! I
heartily endorse her candidacy and hope you do too!
