Copyright/Fair Use/Full Access
ALA must continue its leadership role as a proponent of the fair use of
copyrighted information including full, fair, and long term access to
government documents and information. Government generated information is
researched, written and published with our tax dollars and therefore should be
fully available in accessible formats and at the fair prices to libraries and
library patrons.
In order to ensure that copyright fulfills its purpose to “advance the science
and useful arts,” we must embrace balanced legislation that respects both the
rights of creators and the rights of users. Librarians serve as leaders in
their communities in teaching the public about copyright law. ALA should
continue to provide accurate and full information to the public about
copyright and other information policy issues.
