In 1958, a two-page photograph, taken by Art Kane, appeared in Esquire Magazine, showing 57 of the most famous and not-so-famous jazz musicians of that time in New York City. Variously called The Great Jazz Day or A Great Day in Harlem, it is the most famous photograph in jazz history. Stuart Johnson, member of the Michigan Jazz Record Collectors, will discuss the back story of the photograph. He will play recorded examples of the music of some of the musicians who appeared in the picture.
